Design Technology

Our Curriculum Intent for Design Technology

Design and Technology at Offham develops young children’s skills and knowledge in design, structures, mechanisms, electrical control and a range of materials, including food. We encourage children's creativity and encourage them to think about important issues. Using creativity and imagination, our pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Our pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world.

Teaching and Learning

We use the Kapow scheme to guide our teaching and learning of Design Technology across all year groups. Kapow provide excellent resources, ideas and the scheme of work fulfils the statutory requirements outlined in the National Curriculum. Kapow focus on key areas which include: Cooking and Nutrition, Mechanisms/Mechanical systems, Structures and Textiles additionally in KS2 have Electrical systems and Digital world to focus on. In our Design Technology classes, children get to explore with different materials and tools, building and creating their own projects. This hands-on approach helps them understand how things work and inspires them to discover their own innovative ideas. By combining creativity with practical skills, we help our children become the inventors and designers of the future.
