Offham Primary School

Physical Education

Our Curriculum Intent for P.E

At Offham Primary School we recognise the importance of Physical Education to a child's physical, cognitive, social and emotional development as well as the role it can play in a child's spiritual, moral and cultural development. Physical education develops the children's knowledge, skills and understanding, so that they can perform with increasing competence and confidence in a range of physical activities. It is our intention to provide a broad and balanced curriculum to aid children's increasing self-confidence in their ability to manage themselves and their bodies within a variety of movement situations. A balance of individual, team, co-operative and competitive activities aims to cater for individual pupil's needs and abilities. PE at Offham is considered an important element of the curriculum, which develops a need for healthy lifestyles, a balanced diet, positive growth mind-set and the resilience to persevere with activities no matter how challenging.

PE Curriculum Intent

Teaching and Learning in P.E (Implementation)

At Offham our PE curriculum allows pupils to receive at least two hours of high quality PE that meet the requirements of the national curriculum. All children have a weekly PE lesson with their class teacher and have weekly sessions with a qualified coach. During these sessions, children receive expert coaching to develop fundamental skills through a variety of activities and games suitable to their key stage.

At Offham we are keen to develop the whole child through PE and understand the importance of this therefore our lessons and assessment are underpinned by a holistic approach using Head/Heart/Hands.

 Head

Key skills that develop a child's cognitive ability such as decision making, creativity, evaluating and knowledge and understanding.

 Heart

Key skills that develop a child's social, emotional and behavioural abilities such as motivation, resilience, collaboration and communication.

 Hands

Key skills that develop a child's physical ability such as running, throwing and jumping.

PE Curriculum Progression

Our PE curriculum is sequenced to ensure progression of knowledge and skills, enabling children to build upon prior experiences and apply these with confidence. Embedded within our lessons are opportunities for the children to develop an ability to remember, adapt and apply knowledge, practical skills and concepts in a variety of movement based activities. These skills can be developed further through a range of clubs for both Key Stage One and Two, increasing physical activity and an opportunity to pursue a deeper knowledge of certain sports. Children at Offham will also engage in opportunities during the school day to be physically active such as the daily mile, active lunchtimes and movement breaks. To enhance the children's engagement with PE there are ample enrichment opportunities throughout the school year such as maypole dancing on the village green, a year 5 and 6 residential and healthy living weeks.

Although we enjoy the competitive nature of sport, and provide regular opportunities for teams to compete in intra-school and inter-school competitions, we also appreciate and encourage the importance of children ‘having a go’ and promote positive experiences of being physically active and not always participating to win. We have an inclusive approach and value the importance of physical and mental well-being.

The intended impact of P.E teaching and learning at Offham

At Offham, our aim is to engage all children in regular physical activity and promote positive attitudes towards health, hygiene and fitness. During their time at Offham, children will learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, helping them to make the correct choices regarding how to lead a healthy lifestyle. By the time our children leave school, children will have the skills and tools necessary to facilitate a lifelong participation in physical activity and continue to develop a love of sport.
