Religious Education
Our Curriculum Intent for Religious Education
Religious Education (RE) allows children to acquire core knowledge and understanding of beliefs and practices of Christianity and other world religions.
We aim to engage and enthuse children in learning about different beliefs to help broaden their world view and enable them to reflect on their own spiritual and moral beliefs.
We believe that Religious Education provides an opportunity to celebrate and foster awareness of these differences within our school and the wider world. It is a subject that celebrates diversity and challenges stereotypes.
RE at Offham is enquiry based, enabling children to have the confidence to share their beliefs and viewpoints with their peers.
Teaching and Learning in Religious Education (Implementation)
At Offham, we follow the Discovery RE scheme of work which closely aligns with the statutory requirements of the Kent Agreed Syllabus. Each term the children will focus on a key question, exploring various themes such as commitment, beliefs and stories.
Planning for Religious Education is based on 2 targets:
- Learning about Religions
- Learning from Religions
Learning about religion includes enquiry into and investigation of the nature of religion, its key beliefs and teachings, practices, their impacts on the lives of believers and communities, and the varying ways in which these are expressed. It also includes the skills of interpretation, analysis and explanation. Pupils learn to communicate their knowledge and understanding using specialist vocabulary.
Learning from religion is concerned with developing pupils’ reflection on and response to their own experiences and their learning about religion. It develops pupils’ skills of application, interpretation and evaluation of what they learn about religion, particularly to questions of identity and belonging, meaning, purpose and truth and values and commitments, and communicating their responses.
The Intended Impact of RE Teaching and Learning at Offham
By the end of Key Stage 2, children will have studied the key beliefs, principles and stories of Christianity in depth. They will also have explored and be able to discuss the religions of Judaism, Islam, Hinduism and Sikhism.
Children will have a good understanding of the diverse world around them and will be able to confidently express their own personal and moral beliefs.
Does my child have to join in Religious Education
RE is a statutory subject in all schools in England, except for those children withdrawn at the request of their parents. (Education Act 2002, section 80). It is parents’ legal right to withdraw their children from Religious Education. If you wish to withdraw your child from any part of RE please contact the school office to speak to the Headteacher.
